Anna Fritz

Anna Fritz, cellist-singer-songwriter, as of 2/20/16 had 2 days to raise $3,800 and reach her $15,930 fundraising goal for her album of folk songs, many original. He surpassed that goal and went for the stretch goal of a music video for climate change. Anna says "Singing together casts a spell and makes a prayer. It sets an intention for who we want to be and the world we want to live in." Her producer calls the album a "mash-up between two worlds" - spiritual and activism. Watch her video and learn more about her Kickstarter campaign.

Marcelle Martin & Our Life is Love

Marcelle Martin photoMarcelle Martin's new book, Our Life is Love: the Quaker Spiritual Journey, is a guide to ten elements of the Quaker spiritual path, as experienced by the first Friends and by Quakers in our time.  These elements emerge from stories of Friends' search for a deeper connection with God, the discovery of the divine presence within, the creation of communities of faith led by the Spirit, and the unfolding of faithful, transformed lives that have a healing and prophetic impact on the world.  Our Life is Love is a great resource for groups wishing to explore the Quaker spiritual journey together.

Minga Claggett-Borne and Jonathan Vogel-Borne

Minga, Jonathan, & Jean ZaruWhat do El Camino de Santiago, Palestine, and Rwanda have in common?

Minga Claggett-Borne and Jonathan Vogel-Borne (pictured here with Jean Zaru, clerk of the Ramallah Friends Meeting) are traveling in the ministry among these places and peoples. Minga shares their experiences in her blog, Pedals and Seeds. An excerpt from her Jan 15, 2016 entry follows.

Ministry here in Rwanda seems quite intriguing. We work side-by-side with Rwandans, making sure that they are driving and directing. Jonathan is offering website expertise and I have jumped into numerous peace projects.

Victoria Greene and EMIR Healing Center

Victoria Greene photoAfter losing her son, Emir Greene, to murder when he was 20 years old, Victoria Greene (Green Street Friends Meeting, PhYM) considered her options: murder the murderer, take her own life, or choose life. Victoria chose Life with a capital “L.”

Victoria, her daughter Chantay, a cadre of volunteers, and a board of directors operate EMIR Healing Center (Every Murder is Real), a non-profit which serves and supports family members and friends who have been affected by homicide.

From the very beginning, one of the things about Quakerism that resonated strongly in me was our history of sensuality and vibrant physicality as a sign of spiritual depth and authenticity. When early Friends were filled with the Spirit, it wasn’t an intellectual concept – it was a whole body experience. The power of Divine connection was so intense that they shook, and hence our nickname.

Zachary Moon

Congratulations to Zachary Moon (Camas Friends Church) who on June 29th became ABD, in his PhD study in religion and psychology at Illiff School of Theology. He also gave an inspiring author talk at the FGC Gathering.

As a Quaker and commissioned military chaplain, Zachary says, "Life can take some surprising turns! Growing up a Quaker, war and military service was rarely talked about without negative associations and judgements. As I got older, I felt I needed to learn more than what the political debate about war had to offer; I wanted to build relationships with those on the other side. And the more I did, the more I came to understand the complexity and importance of these issues. Ideological commitments and beliefs concerning war are valuable, but when they keep us apart, both sides are losing."

Bob Schmitt and Laughing Waters Studio

In the very early 90s I began receiving invitations to travel my yearly meeting under a concern for faith and practice as the yearly meeting considered whether to create its own Book of Faith and Practice. My home meeting assigned two members to support my discernment in accepting these invitations and calls to travel. At this time liberal Friends Meetings were only beginning to identify and support members who might have a particular ministry. The understanding of the use of elders for most was limited to traumatic experiences of being shamed and corrected by scolding cranky Friends.
