For more than twenty years, Marcelle Martin has been traveling to teach classes and facilitate workshops related to the spiritual journey, with an emphasis on spiritual practices, Quaker faith, discernment, and supporting faithfulness.  She is the author of the book Our Life is Love: The Quaker Spiritual Journey and the Pendle Hill pamphlets Invitation to a Deeper Communion and Holding One Another in the Light.  Her workshops emphasize direct spiritual experience and sharing with others.  She is called to foster greater spiritual vitality and bold faithfulness among Friends.

Marcelle's ministry has been under the care of Friends since 1997, and is currently under the care of Swarthmore Meeting in Swarthmore, PA.  Below is Marcelle's account of her call to ministry and how this ministry has been supported by Friends:

In 1984, during a time of intense spiritual seeking, I began to experience powerful spiritual openings and sensed a call on my life to help others become more aware of the divine Presence active within us all. 1996, I started leading workshops and teaching classes about the spiritual journey, and writing about it as well. From 2006 to 2010, I was the full-time resident Quaker Studies teacher at Pendle Hill retreat center. I also helped to create and facilitate the 2008-2009 nine-month Way of Ministry program, offered under the care of The School of the Spirit Ministry.

Since 2010, have been writing and traveling to lead workshops. In 2014, for the first time, my oversight committee at Chestnut Hill Meeting actively solicited donations to help with basic living expenses in order to continue this ministry. Support came in a variety of ways that allowed me to finish the manuscript I was writing. In 2015, my book Our Life is Love was published by Inner Light Books. In 2016, after marrying Terry Hauger under the care of both Chestnut Hill and Swarthmore Meetings, I transferred my membership to Swarthmore Meeting, which is closer to where we now live.

In all, I have traveled to Quaker meetings and retreat centers in twelve states and Canada. Since 2016 my talks and workshops have primarily focused on the Quaker spiritual journey and experiential ways to encourage and support faithfulness. In May 2017 I was co-facilitator, with Cynthia Bourgeault and Paulette Meier of a Quaker Wisdom School held at Pendle Hill retreat center. In 2017-2018, I was the core teacher for a nine-month program for Friends in New England entitled Nurturing Worship, Faith & Faithfulness, held at Woolman Hill Quaker Retreat Center. There will be a second offering of the program, called Nurturing Faithfulness, August 2019-May 2020. A second Quaker Wisdom School co-facilitated with Cynthia Bourgeault and Paulette Meier, will be held at Pendle Hill in May 2019.

Currently I am working on a new book about practices to help individuals and faith communities open to the presence of God, live in the power of the Spirit, and support one another in radical Spirit-led faithfulness. I have been led to take a year off from teaching (May 2018 to May 2019) in order to complete this book.

Minute of Religious Service from Swarthmore Meeting for the Ministry of Marcelle Martin

Swarthmore Friends Meeting recognizes that our member, Marcelle Martin, has been called by the Spirit into a ministry of spiritual nurture. She is led to foster deeper awareness of and relationship with the Divine Presence which resides in each person and is active in the world. Her ministry includes facilitating retreats and gatherings, teaching, writing, helping people with discernment, and praying with individuals and groups. Grounded in her own experience of relationship with God, her ministry is an expression of the Quaker call to cultivate a personal and community connection with the Spirit.

We have received the blessing of her ministry among us. We support her call to minister to others, with prayer and by providing a support committee. Marcelle and her committee will report annually. At the end of the third year the meeting will revisit its commitment to support this ministry. We commend Marcelle to all, in the hope that she will be kindly received wherever she serves.

Approved by Swarthmore Monthly Meeting in May 2016 and endorsed by Chester Quarterly Meeting in June 2016.

Funding support is needed to enable me to take a year off from teaching and facilitating workshops in order to complete a new book I am working on about practices to help individuals and faith communities open to the presence of God, live in the power of the Spirit, and support one another in radical Spirit-led faithfulness.
